FSG (Fenway Sports Group) have been Liverpool owners for the past 12 years, and it has been a successful reign for the club under their ownership. They won the Premier League, two league cups, the FA Cup, and the Champions League under their ownership, reaching the finals three times. However, it has recently turned sour, with them languishing in 10th place and 11 points off the top four.
Liverpool clearly needed a midfielder in the summer, as they still haven’t filled the void left by Wijnaldum’s free transfer to PSG. They focused on other areas, bringing in Nunez and Calvin Ramsey; however, they did bring in Arthur on loan, but he got injured not long after signing with the Reds. This was heavily criticized, as they didn’t find other options, as their main target signed for Real Madrid.
As the weeks went by, it showed how much they needed a midfielder as they looked lifeless in the middle of the park. Over this season, they have played many different midfields, with some of them not working as they lacked the press that Klopp loves in his midfield. That is the key reason why Liverpool haven’t done that well this season, as the system hasn’t worked for the players they have and with the lack of funding in that position, Klopp is now paying the price.
There have been talks and options for Liverpool in the midfield next summer, but it’s about finding a player who would fit in Klopp’s system. One player who fits that role is Lorient’s Enzo Le Fee, as his progressive play and tackles would benefit Liverpool and help their midfield. He currently averages 3.29 tackles per 90 and 6.19 progressive passes per 90, which is better than some of the midfielders they have, and at only twenty-two years old, he will have a good future.
If the midfield isn’t funded in the next transfer window, it could be curtains for Liverpool. As with their rivals spending big in the midfield department, Liverpool could potentially fall behind like they are currently doing. They are only in one competition, but are facing one of their bogey teams in Real Madrid after failing to top their group.
There were rumours behind the scenes that Qatari-based owners were interested in buying them, but they have recently died down. Liverpool fans will be surprised to learn that their club is now interested in Manchester United. If they were backed by Qatari owners, they would provide the financial backing that’s needed to get right back to the top, so it would be annoying to see their rival club doing that instead of them as they could fall behind their rivals.
