FFP

When did it get introduced, and what does it stand for?

FFP stands for financial fair play, which is put in place to improve the financial health of European football clubs. It first got introduced in 2010 but didn’t start properly till 2011, and since then it has been important for clubs to follow it.

Why did it get introduced, and what benefit does it have?

It got introduced so that it stops clubs from spending more than they have earned from the season before, which is good. The benefit from this is that it stops clubs from falling into financial trouble, which is helpful for the future of the clubs as if they are spending more than they have earned, it could plummet them into financial trouble.

What is the punishment for failing to abide by it?

There are many punishments for failing to abide by FFP regulations, ranging from point deductions and fines to transfer bans and withholding prize money. If clubs don’t abide by it, they could face some of the punishments, which would be costly for their clubs, which is why clubs do their best to meet the regulations.

What are Man City currently being investigated on?

In recent times, Manchester City have been charged with breaching the Premier League financial rules over a six-year period, and if found guilty, they could face a lot of trouble. We don’t fully know if they are innocent or not, as we haven’t seen what the court has said yet, but if they are found guilty, it could be a long day for them. With the media attempting to degrade the club and make them look terrible without knowing the outcome, which is equally as unfortunate because it makes the club’s fans appear worried and ashamed to support their club.

What could be done better to make sure all clubs abide by the FFP regulations?

One thing that could help is adding a cap on how much a team can spend on player contracts and other things. Money is currently ruining sport, with teams like Chelsea spending 600 million across two windows, while teams like Southend are on the verge of going bankrupt because their owner refuses to help their club. A cap would be beneficial as it would stop money from ruining the sport and control it, which would help clubs abide by the regulations as they know the limit they can spend.
