Oxford come into this game with a 1-goal lead, and they will hope to keep a hold of it and book their place against Bolton at Wembley. Their amazing defence is what helped them in the first leg, so they will hope they can keep it up, especially away from home.
The home side started off the strongest with a few half chances from Hector Kyprianou and Josh Knight, and they kept piling on the pressure until they finally found the deadlock in the game, as from a set piece, Josh Knight smashed it into the left corner to make it 1-1 on aggregate and give his side the advantage in this tie now.
The fun didn’t last long, as from a Cameron Brannagan free kick, the Peterborough captain put his side in trouble, deciding to rashly block the ball with his arm, leaving the ref with no choice but to give a penalty to Oxford, which the reliable Cameron Brannagan slotted away to give his side the lead again in the tie and put them halfway to Wembley.
Second half, and it was all Peterborough as they were trying to find the goal that would kick-start their comeback again with them coming close a few times with Kwame Poku and Mason Clark causing problems for Oxford, but they managed to stand strong and stop them from scoring.
Jason Cumming the on loan goalkeeper from Chelsea, made some crucial saves to keep his side in the game. Peterborough kept pushing, but in the end they didn’t have the answer and Oxford managed to hold on and book their places at Wembley, where the winner get promoted to the championship.
It’s another failed playoff campaign for Peterborough, and it could be one that could prove costly as some of their players could be on the move this summer as they are too good for league one football. The likes of Ronnie Edwards, Kwame Poku and Harrison Burrows could possibly be sold in the summer, which would mean a huge summer rebuild for the posh.
Oxford have the chance to cause an upset at Wembley after not being in the playoff places before the last gameweek they are now one win away from a place in the Championship, which no one saw coming once the League one season first ended.
