They will hope for a fresh start this season; however, it could be without their leading talisman, Ivan Toney, who is rumoured with a move away from the London side, which will prove costly for Thomas Frank’s side.
Brentford began the match stronger than the other London team, as Schade sent a cross into the box that was swiftly dealt with by the Crystal Palace backline. The opposing team is already being tested, which is not the ideal beginning for them.
Palace nearly scored when Eze’s free kick narrowly missed the goal to the left, but the excitement was just beginning.
Crystal Palace thought they had scored a goal with a fantastic free kick by Eze, but it was disallowed due to a foul on Nathan Collins. Shortly after, Mbuemo made a skillful run and scored a goal to put the home team in front.
Both teams have been challenging the goalkeeper, however Palace will feel unlucky as they believe their goal was valid but this is typical in today’s football. Brentford have appeared solid and they will consider their half-time advantage well-earned.
Crystal Palace began the second half aggressively, with Adam Wharton taking shots from outside the box to test Flekkan. However, luck turned in favor of the away side when Munoz headed a cross from Mitchell, which caused Ethan Pinnock to inadvertently deflect it into his own goal. Momentum finally for the away side but can they keep it up
Shortly after, Palace scored a goal but it was disallowed for offside as Edouard slightly got ahed of his opponent to receive and smash it home. Brentford narrowly avoided conceding when it seemed like they were in danger.
Crystal Palace continued to mount pressure, with Wharton nearly scoring from outside the box. Brentford had to withstand this pressure, but they managed to do so in the end.
Ten minutes later Nathan Collins’ shot was saved by Dean Henderson, however Yoan Wissa quickly pounced on the rebound to score and put his team back in the lead. Despite facing pressure, they managed to withstand it and eventually benefited from their resilience
Palace were frantically searching for a goal as they were caught off guard by conceding late, despite dominating the second half. Eze was generating several promising opportunities but couldn’t capitalize on them as Brentford managed to secure a home victory.
This victory will greatly boost Thomas Frank’s confidence after a difficult season last year, giving hope to him and his team for redemption and further progress, providing the necessary momentum.
Palace will view this game as a missed opportunity due to errors in decision-making and substitutions, despite having talented players. Oliver Glasner will aim to build upon this success as they seek to maintain the momentum they achieved in the final stages of the previous season.
