Joao Cancelo and the toxic end of his Man City career

Joao Cancelo has been a solid fullback for Manchester city since signing in 2019 for a deal equalling to sixty million making him the most expensive right back ever but recently he’s not been getting minutes since the world cup finished and with the rise of young talent Rico Lewis putting in solid performances he has struggled to find minutes.

When he first came to man city he struggled and it showed as he couldn’t cement a starting place as he usually rotated with Kyle Walker for a place at right back. He struggled to adapt in his first season looking weak and being out of position in matches which made him not get as much game time as he would’ve liked.

The next season would be his breakout one. He made his first appearance of the season in October after a few months out with injury and he would start to cement a start in Pep’s first team. His first goal for Manchester City would come in the champions league against Olympiakos which would be pivotal as they almost ended up winning it that season. He would be one of the first names on peps team this season as he added the attacking threat needed for his team and also the defensive stability which lead to them winning the premier league and league cup and him making the pfa team of the season.

The next season would be another successful season for the Portuguese left back as he proved to the world he was one of the best full backs in the world going on such an amazing run where he was assisting people for fun and becoming rock solid at the back at the same time. He would end up winning the premier league for the second season in a row and racking up seven assist in the process.

The next season started good for him starting in the first 16 premier league games but he went in some bad form before the world cup picking up a red card against Fulham for denying a goalscoring opportunity and the next game losing to an inform Brentford side where he played 84 minutes. The world cup hit and he played the 90 minutes in all the group games showing signs of progress but he would be eventually benched in the knockout stages. His country would eventually be knocked out against Morocco in the quarter finals. Coming back to Manchester he didn’t get as much game time falling out of favour with manager Pep. There was apparently a bust up which Joao denied but we don’t know if its true yet.

He would then sign on loan with Bayern Munich with an option to buy 70 million. I think it was best for all parties that deal was done as he had a negative impact on the dressing room with his antics and since he has had a fall out with manager pep it would’ve been hard to get more game time after that.

It looks like he’s leaving Manchester City for good but if he wanted to make it at City. If he wanted to he would have to drop his ego and be willing to fight for his place but it seems like he’s moving on to better things at Bayern Munich. This environment will hopefully make him recapture his form of last year which he hasn’t found so far yet.
